Intorduction to Computer Networks: Types of Computer Networks

 What is broadcast network?

Ans: Broadcast networks have a single communication channel that is shared by all the computers in the network. Packets sent by any computer are received by all the others. An address fill within the packet specifies for whom it is intended upon receiving a packet; a computer checks the address field. If the packet is intended for itself it process the packet; if the packet is intended for some other computer it is just ignored.

What is point to point channel?
Points to points networks consists of many connections between individuals pairs of computers. To go from source to the destination, a packet on this type of network may have to first visit one or more intermediate computers.

What is LAN?

Local area networks, generally called LANs, are privately owned networks within a single building or campus of up to a few kilometers in size. They are widely used to connect personal computers and workstations in company offices and factories and resources and exchange information.

 What is MAN?
A metropolitan area networks, or MAN is basically a bigger version of a LAN and normally uses similar technologies. It might cover a group of nearby cooperate offices or a city and might be either private or public.

  What is WAN?

A wide area network or WAN, spans a large geographical area, often a country or continent. It contains a collection of computers intended for running user programs called hosts or end systems. The hosts are connected by a communication subnet, or just subnet for short.

 What is an internet?

Many computers networks exists in the world, often with different hardware and software. People connected to one network often want to communicate with people attached to a different one. This desire requires connecting together different and frequently incompatible networks. The connection is made by using computers called gateways to provide the necessary translation both in terms of hardware and software. A collection of interconnected networks is called an internetwork or internet.

 What is the Internet?

The Internet is a specific world wide internet that is widely used to connect universities, government offices and private individuals.

Classify computer networks based on transmission technology.

There are two types of  networks based  on transmission technology:
i)                   Broadcast networks.
ii)                Point-to-point networks.

i)                   Broadcast networks: Broadcast networks have a single communication channel that is shared by all the computers on the networks. Packets sent by any computer are received by all the others. An address field within the packet specifies for whom it is intended. Upon receiving a packet, a computer checks the address field. If the packet is intended for itself, it processes the packet; if the packet is intended for some other computer, it is just ignored.
ii)                Point-to-point networks: Point-to-point networks consist of many connections between individual pairs of computers. To go from source to the destination, a packet on this type of network may have to first visit one or more intermediate computers.

Classify computer network based on their scale.

There are three types of computer networks based on their scale:
i)                   Local Area networks
ii)                Metropolitan Area networks.
iii)              Wide Area Networks.

i)                   Local Area Networks: Local area networks generally called LANs, are privately owned networks within a single building or campus of up to a few kilometers in size. They re wide used to connect personal computers and workstations in company offices and factories to share resources and exchange information.
ii)                Metropolitan Area Networks: A metropolitan area networks or MAN, is basically a bigger version of LAN and normally uses similar technologies. It might cover a group of nearly corporate offices or a city and might be either private or public.
iii)              Wide Area Networks: Wide area networks or WAN spans a large geographical area, often a country or a continent. It contains a collection of computer hosts or end systems. The hosts are connected by a communication subnet, or just subnet for short.
Ana_c) Discuss the difference between internet and the Internet?
Ans: Many computer networks exits in the world, often with different hardware and sofrware. People connected to one network often want to communicate with people attached to a different one. This desire requires connecting together different and frequently incompatible networks. The connection is made by using computers called gateways to provide the necessary translation both in terms of hardware and software. A collection of interconnected networks is called an internetwork or just internet. A common form of internet is collection of LANs connected by WAN.
The Internet: The Internet is specific world wide internet that is widely used to connect universities, government offices, companies and private individuals.
